Back to school (9/3/2018)
With back to school in the air I think of apples, and the countless bulletin boards I decorated with cute pictures of apples in September. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine Apples are cooling in nature; sweet and sour in flavor and reduce heat, especially summer heat. They produce fluids for the body in general, but particularly to moisten dryness and cool heat in the lungs. Apples stimulate the appetite and remedies indigestion, this ability due in part to the presence of malic and tartaric acids, which inhibit the growth of disease producing bacteria in the digestive tract. Apples contain pectin, which removes cholesterol and toxic metals such as lead and mercury and the residues of radiation. They benefit low blood sugar conditions and the emotional depression associated with it. A poultice of grated apple over the eyes for twenty minutes helps relieve swelling and irritations such as sunburn or “pink eye” (heat conditions…) Apples and their juice are cleansing and beneficial for the liver and gallbladder, actually softening gall stones. We have always heard “an apple a day…”
